State College Spikes News Release

(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - Cats and dogs have always battled for supremacy in the world of housepets, and now the State College Spikes will give cats their due. The Spikes will open the gates to felines of all nearly all stripes with the inaugural "Purr in the Park" at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this Monday, July 11 during the team's 7:05 p.m. matchup against the Batavia Muckdogs (St. Louis Cardinals).

Following in the pawprints of the Spikes' "Bark in the Park" nights, "Purr in the Park" gives cats and their owners the opportunity to go on the prowl at the ballpark and enjoy a wide array of cat-centric activities. Owners can bring their cats either in a carrier or on a leash, and cats will be able to roam the ballpark concourse and sit in the Outfield Bleachers in right field.

Plus, the Spikes will rightfully acclaim cats for scratching out achievements in both sports and entertainment with tributes throughout the game, as well as very special feline-focused on-field contests, including:

-Ceremonial first pitch "Hairball Tosses"

-Mascots hitting the CATwalk to show their stuff for their feline friends

-A sumo "Cat Fight"

-The Nine Lives Challenge, featuring two contestants clawing their way to victory throughout the night in the Kitty Litter Dig, the Warm Milk Chugging Contest and the Tuna Eating Challenge

-A spotlight on famous cat nicknames in sports, such as Andres "The Big Cat" Galarraga, Dave "Tiger" Williams and, in a stretch, Jim "Catfish" Hunter

-Grr-eat videos featuring famous cats big and small throughout the ages, like Keyboard Cat, Garfield, Heathcliff, Simba from "The Lion King," Tigger, Leo the MGM Lion, Sylvester from "Looney Tunes," Hello Kitty, Tom from "Tom and Jerry," and Tony the Tiger.

Even on "Purr in the Park" night, though, cats must find a way to co-exist with their canine brethren. Not only are the Batavia MuckDOGS the Spikes' opponent on the field, but fans can feast on $1 hot dogs all game long as part of Dollar Dog Monday, presented by 95.3 FM 3WZ.

The fun begins when gates open to the public at 6 p.m. Monday, and fans can grab even more value with special half-price Outfield Bleacher tickets. Just use the special code "CATS" when buying and printing your own tickets on StateCollegeSpikes.com, and get $3 off your Outfield Bleacher seats.

The Spikes cap off a three-game homestand with "Purr in the Park," and will return home on Sunday, July 17, for a 6:05 p.m. matchup against the rival Williamsport Crosscutters, affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Fans can join the Spikes in honoring our nation's heroes on Military Appreciation Night, with a tremendous post-game FIREWORKS display presented by Your Buliding Centers.

Tickets for Monday's game, as well as every Spikes regular season home game, are currently on sale through the Spikes Box Office by calling (814) 272-1711 or by visiting in person. Fans can also buy and print single-game tickets by visiting StateCollegeSpikes.com.
