Staten Island Takes Series Finale From Lake Monsters 9-1 On Monday

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Staten Island Yankees scored six runs on eight straight hits in the top of the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Vermont Lake Monsters 9-1 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

The Yankees already led 3-0 heading into the fifth when Zach Wilson got the hit parade started with a one-out solo home run to leftfield off Lake Monster starter J.C. Menna. It was Wilson's second home run of the season and ended the night for Menna, who allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Jeiler Castillo took over for Menna and promptly back-to-back singles to Reymond Nunez and Shane Brown before a Casey Stevenson two-run double gave the Yankees a 6-0 lead. Staten Island then put together three straight infield singles to score another run before Cito Culver capped off the eight straight hits with a two-run single for the 9-0 advantage.

Vermont got its only run and its only two hits of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Chad Lewis leadoff double and Nick Rickles one-out RBI single off Staten Island starter Evan DeLuca (3-0, 1.08 ERA), who walked one and struckout six over five innings for the victory.

Mason Willams went 4-for-6 with a double, triple and RBI for Staten Island (19-4), which has now won five of its last six and 18 of last 20 games. Stevenson was 2-for-5 with a run, double and three RBI, while Jhorge Liccien went 3-for-5 with two runs and a double for the Yankees.

Logan Chitwood came on in relief for Vermont in the seventh inning and struckout four in three scoreless innings with the only runner reaching base came on a two-out error in the ninth inning. The game was played in front of a season-best 3,542 fans at Centennial, most of whom helped contribute to roughly hot dogs being eaten as part of the "Hot Dog Heaven" 25-cent hot dog night.

Vermont (14-8) is off on Tuesday before heading to Maryland for three games against the Aberdeen Ironbirds Wednesday through Friday. That series then shifts to Centennial Field as the Lake Monsters will host Aberdeen for three games Saturday through Monday evening.
