Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Troy, NY- The Aberdeen IronBirds used a big night at the plate from Mike Yastrzemski to knock off the Tri-City ValleyCats 3-1 Sunday evening. Yastrzemski hit an RBI triple in the 6th and an RBI double in the 8th to give the IronBirds a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Tri-City scored the opening run of the game off of Aberdeen starter Sebastian Vader in the bottom of the third. Chan Moon led off with a single, and then stole second. Two batters later, Ryan Dineen reached on an error charged to IronBirds' second baseman Jeff Kemp, and it was enough to score Moon from third.

After starter Kyle Westwood left the game, Chris Cotton came on to pitch the sixth. That's when the IronBirds got the bats going. Jared Breen singled, extending his hitting streak to ten games.

Then Yastrzemski tripled, which allowed Breen to score easily.

In the eighth, the IronBirds took the lead and never looked back. Scott Kalush reached second on an error by centerfielder D'Andre Toney. Breen then singled again, putting runners on first and third. Yastrzemski then doubled, which scored Kalush. Breen ended up on third, and would come in to score when Trey Mancini hit a sac fly to center, making it 3-1.

David Richardson pitched the final four outs to get the save. Jorge Rivera got the win, improving to 2-0. Cotton took the loss, falling to 0-1. Vader, the Aberdeen starter, went six innings, allowed two hits, one run (it was earned), walked two, and struck out three.

The same two teams will do battle tomorrow. LHP Steve Brault will get the start for Aberdeen, while LHP Randall Fant will go for the ValleyCats. Also announced during the game was that Mark Appel, the number one overall draft pick from last month's draft, will get the start for Tuesday's 11 a.m. game for Tri-City.
