Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
BURLINGTON, VT (July 7, 2013) - Jordan Harrison took the mound at Centennial Field on Sunday night and rebounded nicely after a disappointing start his last time out against the IronBirds. Following his first loss, Harrison would be key in getting his team off on the right foot in the opening game of the first series outside the division. And once again, the Porter, Texas native delivered five shutout innings as the 'Gades held on for a 4-2 victory.
Vermont had a talented pitcher of their own waiting in the wings in the form of Brent Powers, who was coming off two straight wins in six inning gems against Tri-City and Connecticut. Each team would pick up a single in the first but nothing else. Then, they'd both go in order in the second before being held in check in the third.
The Renegades finally broke through in the fourth after another double off the bat of Jonathan Qui̮̱onez with one out. Omar Narvaez continued his hot stretch with an RBI single into center before moving to second on the throw to the plate. The next batter, Darryl George, provided the second double of the inning to score Narvaez and give the 'Gades a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Julian Ridings reached on a fielder's choice groundout with two outs which allowed Ariel Soriano to single him to third. After Soriano stole second, Qui̮̱onez brought in two more runs with a single to add to the score and make it 4-0.
Once Harrison (4-1) departed after the fifth, Michael Johns called on righty reliever Colton Reavis for the first time this season. After getting the first two outs in order, Ryan Huck doubled to left to keep the inning going. Chad Pinder then hit a ball to Patrick Blair at shortstop, but a throwing error allowed an unearned run to score and trim the Renegades lead to 4-1.
The middle of Vermont's order tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth off Harmen Sidhu, who pitched a scoreless seventh. Sidhu walked B.J. Boyd before Huck hit his second double to score the run and make it 4-2. Hudson Valley was retired in order in the top of the ninth, giving the Lake Monsters one last chance to come back from a two-run deficit.
Michael Soto led off the inning with a single, but Mitchell Marincov gave Sidhu a lovely gift in the form of a 6-4-3 double play. Josh Miller would be their final chance, but he grounded out to Blair at short to end the ballgame and give the Renegades the first game of the series.
NOTES: Soriano, Qui̮̱onez, and Narvaez each went 2-for-4 and accounted for six of the Renegades eight hits...the Renegades had just one base hit after the fifth, a Narvaez single with one out in the eighth...Reavis made his first appearance of the season after being activated from the 7-Day Disabled List on July 5...Sidhu picked up his first save by pitching the final three innings.
The series continues Monday night in the middle game of three at 7:05 PM. The Renegades will return home to The Dutch on Wednesday, July 10 for the start of a six-game homestand against the Jamestown Jammers and the State College Spikes.
