Lowell Spinners News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - After seeing the offense awaken in the ninth inning of Saturday night's win, the Lowell Spinners must have been hoping for a similar string of luck Sunday afternoon. The team however could not pick-up the timely hit, managing just five hits in total, while committing three errors in a 3-0 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones Sunday afternoon at MCU Park.

Brooklyn (8-12) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Simon Mercedes. After a lead-off walk, L.J. Mazzilli singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Mercedes battled back to strike out the next two, but an infield single by Alex Sanchez brought in a run when Cleuluis Rondon's throw went awry, and Jorge Rivero followed with a single through the hole at second to put the Cyclones ahead, 2-0.

Lowell (11-8) had a chance in the top half of the fifth inning when Reed Gragnani doubled to lead off the inning. A Rondon groundout moved Gragnani to third, and Carlos Asuaje and David Sopilka walked, loading the bases, but Nick Moore and Tzu-Wei Lin struck out to leave the bases loaded.

The Spinners would leave two on in both the sixth and eighth innings and the Cyclones would score a run in the eighth with some small ball for what would hold as a 3-0 final.

The loss spoiled the professional debut of left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell, who threw two scoreless innings to start the game. A fifth round pick out of the University of Kentucky, Littrell worked quickly allowing just one hit while striking out one. Mercedes (1-1, 1.71) pitched well in relief, striking out a season-high five in six innings, but the three runs were more than enough for the Cyclones.

Each member of the Spinners line-up, 2-through-five picked up a hit, as did Moore, but the Spinners could do nothing with them. Aaron King extended his hitting streak to seven-games, each game he has played in since joining the team, while Rondon saw his hitting streak snapped at six with an 0-for-4 day.

The two teams meet again Monday evening when Jamie Callahan (1-1, 6.17) gets the ball for a 7pm first pitch.
