All Good Things Must End
The IronBirds saw their season high five game winning streak come to an end last night, as the Brooklyn Cyclones were able to take a 5-3 win in the series finale at Ripken Stadium. Michael Joseph took the loss for the IronBirds. He pitched in the decisive seventh inning that saw the Cyclones use six hits to gain three runs and take the lead late in the game. Patrick Biondi hit a two RBI single and then came in to score later in the inning, leading Brooklyn to the win. Conor Bierfeldt homered to deep left in the loss for the IronBirds
Strikeouts Galore!
This season, the IronBirds are seeing a ton of strikeouts. For the Aberdeen pitching staff, they enter play this afternoon just one strikeout behind the Brooklyn Cyclones for the league lead. The Cyclones have racked up 173 strikeouts so far this season. At the plate, the IronBirds batters have struck out the most often in the league. They have been sent down on strikes 188 times this season. The next closest is the Hudson Valley Renegades, who have been fanned 166 times.
Breen Keeps Going
Jared Breen extended his hitting streak last night to nine games, tying the season high for the IronBirds that was set by Sam Kimmel. Kimmel had a 9 game hit streak that lasted from June 22nd through July 1st. During the hitting streak, Breen has raised his average from .143 to .210. His streak started back on June 26th, in the IronBirds' rain-shortened 3-0 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones.
On the mound tonight...
RHP Sebastian Vader returns to the mound this afternoon in search of his third consecutive win. In his last start, against the Hudson Valley Renegades, Vader went 6.1 innings, allowed four hits, two runs (both earned), walking one and striking out six. He has gone at least five innings in each of his four starts. He will be opposed by RHP Kyle Westwood. Westwood last pitched on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) in a five inning start at Vermont. He took the loss as the ValleyCats fell 2-1 in the first game of a double-header. He will be making his fourth start of the season, and comes in with a 1-1 record and a 0.68 ERA.
Welcoming a New Face
Today's game marks the first time the IronBirds see an opponent outside of the McNamara Division. Tri-City currently leads the Stedler Division with a record of 13-7. The ValleyCats will visit Ripken Stadium August 2nd-4th.
