Iowa Falls in 12-Inning Clash
June 8, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa (34-29) and Albuquerque (29-34) battled through 12 innings, but the Isotopes came away with an 8-7 victory to hand the I-Cubs their fifth-straight loss Saturday at Principal Park.
Albuquerque opened the scoring in the fourth as the Isotopes collected three consecutive hits with two down to plate a pair. Isotopes starter Chi Chi Gonzalez held Iowa off the board until the fifth when Trent Giambrone blasted his 10th homer of the season to cut the deficit in half.
The long ball pushed Iowa to the lead in the sixth with a two-run opposite field shot from Ian Happ - his 10th of the season - but Albuquerque quickly responded with a four-run seventh to recapture the lead.
Iowa battled back in the bottom of the frame as Giambrone set the stage with a one-out double. Donnie Dewees punched a towering home run to right field to pull the I-Cubs within a run.
Randy Rosario and Rowan Wick helped quiet the Isotopes bats in the late frames to keep Iowa in the game. Jacob Hannemann came through with clutch hitting in the ninth as he cracked Iowa's fourth home run of the game to deadbolt the contest 6-6.
The game moved into extras and remained locked until the 12th. With the bench thinned, Hannemann came on to pitch for Iowa and pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. took the first base bag. Hannemann gave up a two-run shot to Garrett Hampson as Iowa's fate was sealed.
The I-Cubs pushed in their free runner in the bottom of the frame but fell just shy of victory.
Postgame Notes:
- Colin Rea collected his fourth quality start of the season, allowing two earned runs through 6.0 innings. He gave up four hits, walked three and struck out five.
- Donnie Dewees has homered in three-straight games and four of his last six.
- Phillip Evans went 3-for-6 to log his second three-hit game of the season.
- Ian Happ went 1-for-3 with three walks to tie a career high.
Iowa and Albuquerque meet for Sunday Funday tomorrow at Principal Park. Promotions include an IPTV 50th Anniversary Celebration with guest appearances from Dan Wardell and Abby Brown. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
