San Antonio Missions News Release
LAS VEGAS - The Las Vegas Aviators proved that not everything stays in Vegas. The Aviators assaulted the Missions with four homers in route to an 8-2 series opening win Friday night in front of the 24th sellout crowd in the newly minted Las Vegas Ballpark.
The game was scoreless until Keston Hiura roped a run-scoring double to left field in the sixth inning to give San Antonio a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived.
Vegas clubbed three homers in a six-run sixth inning. Two of the blasts came off starter Burch Smith (3-3), who had permitted only four singles entering the frame. Smith was charged with the first five runs.
Alex Wilson allowed a homerun after relieving Smith, and Angel Perdomo served up a 451-foot two run blast to Seth Smith an inning later to pad the Aviators lead.
Nate Orf slugged a solo shot in the eighth inning for San Antonio, which has been outscored 21-9 over the last two games.
The Missions were held to four hits as their streak of scoring at least seven runs was snapped at four games. It was the first such streak for a San Antonio club since the 2012 season.
The Missions lead in the American Southern Division was trimmed to a half game over Round Rock, which blanked Salt Lake on Friday night.
