Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (22-33) defeated St. Paul (28-29) in dominant fashion Friday night, notching their first home victory against the Saints by a final score of 15-2.
The I-Cubs got the scoring started right away in the bottom of the first, when Michael Hermosillo drove in the game's first runs on an RBI double. Tony Wolters plated two more with a bases-loaded double of his own. Tyler Ladendorf rounded out the inning with an RBI single, and Iowa finished the inning with a 5-0 lead after sending all nine of their batters to the plate.
On the other side of the ball, Iowa starter Matt Swarmer was locked in. He completed six shutout innings, allowing only four hits and two walks. It was Swarmer's first scoreless outing for Iowa this season and his second quality start, with both of them coming against St. Paul.
The I-Cubs provided Swarmer with plenty of run support. Every Iowa hitter registered at least one hit in the first six frames and six of them notched two or more knocks. When Swarmer completed his outing, the I-Cubs held a 12-0 lead over the Saints and had already combined for a season-high 18 hits.
Iowa's bullpen wasn't much easier for the Saints, with Michael Rucker pitching a scoreless inning and allowing only one hit. Tommy Nance closed it out for the I-Cubs, surrendering just two runs on three hits in two innings of work to secure the win. The performance halted Iowa's losing streak at three.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Andrew Romine and Tyler Ladendorf both notched their first four-hit games of the season tonight. Romine went 4-for-6 with two runs scored, and Ladendorf went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs.
Iowa set a new season high in hits in tonight's game, with 22 as a team.
Matt Swarmer earned his first win of the season tonight and lowered his Triple-A ERA to 9.59. He is now 1-4 with Iowa in 2021.
Iowa and St. Paul will play again tomorrow in game five of the series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:08 pm. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
