Sanabia's Dominance, Mazeika's Power, and Jackson's Timely Hit Lead Syracuse to 2-1 Win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in Ten Innings

Moosic, PA - The Syracuse Mets overcame a late deficit to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 2-1, on Friday night. In his second start with Syracuse, Alex Sanabia was outstanding, putting together seven innings of one-run baseball, allowing six hits, walking two, and striking out two.

Syracuse (17-39) trailed Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 1-0, entering the top of the eighth inning. Reliever Braden Bristo recorded two quick outs for the RailRiders, but Patrick Mazeika came to the plate and blasted a game-tying solo home run to right-center field, tying the game, 1-1.

The Mets bullpen kept the RailRiders off the board. Stephen Nogosek followed Sanabia's seven innings with two perfect innings on the mound. Nogosek retired all six batters he faced, including five with strikeouts, sending the game to the tenth inning.

Syracuse took its first lead in the top of the tenth. Sal Romano came into the game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and César Puello started the frame at second base as the free runner teams get in extra innings. Cheslor Cuthbert led off the inning, and flew out to deep-center field, allowing Puello to tag up and advance to third base. Drew Jackson followed by ripping a ball into center field for a go-ahead RBI single that scored Puello to give Syracuse a 2-1 lead.

Mets reliever Bradley Roney came out to pitch the bottom of the tenth for Syracuse. Greg Allen started at second base as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's free runner in the tenth. Roney struck out Kyle Holder to lead off the frame, but Armando Alvarez reached on an error, putting runners at first and second base. Roney proceeded to strike out both Andrew Velazquez and Estevan Florial to end the game and preserve a 2-1 Syracuse win.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (36-18) scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth after three scoreless innings to start the game. With one out, Trey Amburgey flied a ball to center field that Syracuse center fielder Albert Almora Jr. didn't locate off the bat as the ball fell for a double. Next, Rob Brantly lifted a ball into shallow left field behind third base that Syracuse third baseman J.D. Davis also had trouble locating, and the ball dropped in for a single that moved Amburgey to third. Next, Kyle Holder hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Amburgey and giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 lead.

RailRiders starting pitcher Deivi García turned in five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, walking five, and striking out three. Reliever Reggie McClain followed García with two scoreless innings before the Mets rallied and eventually won the game.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre return to PNC Field on Saturday for the second doubleheader of the series. Game one begins at 5:05 p.m. Game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The Mets and RailRiders split a doubleheader on Wednesday night.
