DES MOINES, IA - For nine straight games at Principal Park the St. Paul Saints felt like it was CHS Field South. On Friday night they found out what it was like to be on the other side of all the beatings they had given the Iowa Cubs in their own ballpark as they gave up a season high 22 hits in a 15-2 loss.

Saints starter Chandler Shepherd got into trouble in the bottom of the first as Trent Giambrone led off with a walk and Andrew Romine singled him to second. With one out, Michael Hermosillo made it 1-0 with a double to right. After Trayce Thompson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Tony Wolters doubled down the first base line scoring a pair of runs to make it 3-0. With two outs, Tyler Ladendorf's two-run single to left-center made it 5-0.

In the third, Ladendorf got Shepherd again when he hit a solo homer to left, his second of the season, to make it 6-0.

The I-Cubs kept pouring it on in the fourth when Hermosillo singled with one out. Trayce Thompson followed with a single that put runners at the corners. Wolters then reached on a fielder's choice grounder to short as Hermosillo scored and Thompson reached second making it 7-0. An infield single by Vance Vizcaino loaded the bases and Ladendorf made it 8-0 with an RBI single to center. Ian Miller's sacrifice fly made it 9-0. Shepherd went 4.0 innings allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 13 hits while walking one and striking out two.

In the fifth the I-Cubs scored three off of Saints reliever Ian Gibaut. With one out Rivas singled to left and Hermosillo walked. With two outs Walters made it 10-0 with an RBI single to right. Back-to-back RBI singles by Vizcaino and Ladendorf made it 12-0.

The Saints used a position player in the eighth, but it wasn't Willians Astudillo. Instead it was Drew Stankiewicz, who had also pitched in two games for the Saints as an Independent team in 2020. After retiring the first hitter on a fly out, Romine singled to right-center and Rivas homered to right, his third of the season, making it 14-0. Hermosillo reached on an error by the second baseman Sherman Johnson and Thompson doubled him to third. After a strikeout of Wolters, Vizcaino's infield single scored Hermosillo to make it 15-0.

The Saints avoided the shutout in the ninth when Astudillo led off with an infield single to third. With one out Damek Tomscha doubled him to third and with two outs Johnson singled both runners home.

The same two teams meet in game five of the six-game series on Saturday night at 7:08 p.m. The Saints send RHP Beau Burrows (1-1, 5.75) to the mound against I-Cubs RHP Adrian Sampson (4-2, 5.26). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.1
