Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (34-37) and Nashville Sounds (44-32) split a doubleheader, Thursday at Principal Park with Iowa taking game one 3-0 and Nashville winning the second contest, 7-4. Matt Murton led the offense by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored over the two games and Jeimer Candelario chipped in a 3-for-6 night.

In game one, Iowa broke the scoreless contest in the fourth inning when Mark Zagunis drilled a double and later scored on a single from Candelario. The I-Cubs extended their lead to the final 3-0 score in the sixth with the help of a RBI double from Juan Perez and a bases-loaded walk issued by Patrick Schuster. Dallas Beeler (2-0) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the win and Corey Black collected his first Triple-A save.

Nashville came alive in game two and sealed Iowa's fate with a four-run third inning. The Sounds loaded the bases with one out and a bases-clearing double from Matt McBride was enough to chase starter Starling Peralta from his Triple-A debut. Peralta was ultimately tagged with five earned runs over 2.2 innings to take the loss.

Iowa battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Vimael Machin opened the inning with a walk and John Andreoli followed with a double to put two on for Juan Perez. Perez drilled a deep fly ball to bring in one and Zagunis tallied a RBI groundout for the second run.

The I-Cubs plated another in the fourth to pull within two, but Nashville made up that ground and more when it took advantage of three walks in the fifth to make it 7-3, Sounds. Iowa put one more tally on the board in the sixth, but was unable to makeup the difference.

Iowa and Nashville wrap up the series at 7:08 p.m., tomorrow at Principal Park for Friday Night Fireworks. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
