51s Slam Aces with Five-Run Eighth

RENO - The Reno Aces overcame a 5-1 deficit with a five-run sixth inning, only to see the Las Vegas 51s answer with a five-run eighth en route to a 12-10 victory on Wednesday night at Greater Nevada Field. The Aces rallied for four runs over their last two trips to the plate but ultimately came up short and dropped their second consecutive game for the first time in nearly a month.

Vying for their 40th win of the season, the Aces (39-33) scored five runs in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Seven straight batters reached against 51s starter Duane Below and reliever Jeff Walters, including run-scoring singles by Ed Lucas (@ELuke21), Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3), Tuffy Gosewisch @santiagosewisch) and Zach Borenstein. Earlier in the frame, Kyle Jensen split the gap in right-center for an RBI triple.

After Reno's Enrique Burgos delivered a scoreless seventh, Las Vegas (39-33) rallied for five runs against Dominic Leone (@DLeone54). Brandon Nimmo delivered the game-tying knock before Dilson Herrera crushed his second grand slam and 11th homer of the season over the left-field videoboard, giving the 51s the lead for good.

The Aces rebounded in the bottom half for three runs, two coming on Gosewisch's seventh homer of the year. Two batters later, Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) tripled home Todd Glaesmann (@toddglaesmann22) to bring the Aces within one. All three runs were charged to left-hander Josh Edgin who was riding a 14-inning scoreless streak prior to Reno's two-out eruption.

Nimmo provided Las Vegas with two important insurance runs on a two-out single in the ninth, as Reno's Mitch Haniger (@M_Hanny19) launched his sixth homer in 13 games with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.

Reno grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the first on a two-out RBI double by Jensen, but the visitors scored one run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth off Aces starter Braden Shipley (@shipley25) to secure a 4-1 lead. Three walks and a fielder's choice in the sixth pushed Las Vegas' lead to four, before the late-inning dramatics ensued.

Shipley walked a season-high four batters in a no-decision, and the Aces' pitching staff matched a franchise record with 12 walks, two more than the 51s' hit total.

Jeff Walters (1-2) got the win in relief for Las Vegas, and Leone (3-1) suffered his first loss after recording just one out and allowing five earned runs on three hits and two walks. Sewald notched the final four outs to earn his second save of the series and ninth overall this season.

The Aces and 51s continue their four-game series with game three on Thursday at Greater Nevada Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. PT. Left-hander Edwin Escobar (4-1, 3.65) gets the nod for Reno, while Las Vegas will counter with righty Gabriel Ynoa (8-2, 3.45).
