
Intimidators Rout Shorebirds 16-6 In Game Two

Salisbury, Md. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (24-16) scored seven runs in the first two innings and cruised to a 16-6 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (24-19) on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The 16 runs allowed by the Shorebirds were the most since August 30, 2009 when they gave up 17 against Hagerstown. Kannapolis has won five of six meetings with the Shorebirds this year.
Kannapolis exploded in the first inning for five runs against Shorebirds starter Jarret Martin. Ross Wilson drew a walk to start the frame. Drew Lee then hit a high chopper that soared over Adam Gaylord's head into left field. Then, Trayce Thompson walked to load the bases. Martin threw a wild pitch to score the first run. After another walk to Mike Blanke scored the second run, Brady Shoemaker hit a three-run homer to lift Kannapolis to a 5-0 lead.
The Intimidators tacked on two more runs in the second. Kyle Eveland walked to open the inning and Drew Lee singled. Then, Trayce Thompson hit a two-run double to right-center field to increase the lead to 7-0.
In the fourth, the Intimidators increased the lead to 10-0. Trayce Thompson blasted his ninth homer of the season. Two batters later, Shoemaker connected on his second homer of the night to make it a 9-0 lead. John Spatola singled home Rafael Vera to increase the lead to 10-0 lead.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the fifth inning. Michael Ohlman led off with a double. After two outs were recorded, Brenden Webb hit a low-lying liner that sailed over the left field wall to pull the âBirds within 10-2. It was Webb's first home run of the 2011 season.
Kannapolis plated six runs in the fifth inning to take a 16-2 lead. The Intimidators sent ten batters to the plate in the fifth and recorded seven hits.
In the sixth, the Shorebirds added a run on a Mike Flacco double into left-center field. In the seventh, Delmarva added three runs on four hits including RBIs by Ty Kelly and Kipp Schutz.
Kannapolis starter Matt Heidenreich earned the win over 6.2 innings while Shorebirds starter Martin was pinned with the loss in 2.2 innings.
Shorebirds reliever D.J. Ferguson held the Intimidators scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.
The Shorebirds and the Intimidators will play game three of the series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. LHP Jacob Pettit is the scheduled starter.
