Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads struck for two unearned runs in the eighth inning to come back for the 5-4 win against the Rome Braves before 4,762 fans at State Mutual Stadium in Rome on Saturday night.
The Crawdads (23-19) again struck first, plating three runs in the top of the second inning against RHP Caleb Brewer and the Braves. With one out, DH Josh Richmond reached on an error, followed by singles from 3B Christian Villanueva and RF Jhonny Gomez to load the bases. 2B Alejandro Selen then lined a two-run single to left field, bringing in Richmond and Villanueva to get the 'Dads on the board. After Gomez took third on a fly out, CF Teodoro Martinez brought him in on an RBI bunt base hit to put the Crawdads in front, 3-0.
Hickory starter RHP Roman Mendez dealt the first three frames in no-hit fashion, before Rome (15-28) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. RF David Rohm led of with a double blooped right behind first base and scored one out later on an RBI double by DH Robby Hefflinger, cutting the 'Dads lead to 3-1.
Rome kept swinging away through the middle innings, tying it in the fifth and moving in front in the sixth. With runners at the corners and one out in the fifth, Rohm belted a two-run triple to tie the game at 3-3.
The Braves kept the charge going, moving in front with a run in the sixth. RHP Joe Van Meter (W, 3-0) took over with two on and one out, and got LF Bobby Raugh to fly out to center for the second out, although it advanced runners to the corners. 2B Matt Lipka then bounced into an RBI fielder's choice, driving in Garcia from third before the out was retired to end the inning, putting the Braves in the 4-3 lead.
Still trailing by one, the opportunistic Crawdads came back in the eighth to retake the lead against RHP Danilo Alvarez (L, 3-2). Richmond reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second after Villanueva worked a walk. Gomez then grounded a fielder's choice to SS Edward Salcedo, who fired wide of second base and sailed the ball all the way into foul territory down the right field line. The misfire enabled Richmond and Villanueva to come in, jumping the Crawdads back in front, 5-4.
After Van Meter dealt a scoreless eighth, RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 2) followed with a perfect ninth inning to close the 5-4 win for the Crawdads.
