Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Alex Bregman hit a conventional home run and Derek Fisher drilled an inside-the-park shot as Corpus Christi dispatched San Antonio 5-3 Tuesday at Whataburger Field before 4,547.

Leading off the eighth and down 0-2 in the count following two failed bunt attempts, Fisher unloaded on Brandon Alger to dead center. Though turned around, Auston Bousfield was able to track the ball, but it struck the wall inches below the yellow line just beyond his reach. Fisher scored easily.

Brendan McCurry achieved the last five outs for Corpus Christi to register his fourth save. McCurry pitched around a double and base-on-balls in the eighth, then retired the Missions in order. Chris Cotton provided 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Hooks, who captured the series 3-1, have won seven of their last 10.

The visitors tagged Francis Martes for a run in the first, Nick Schulz's booming two-out triple to right-center scoring Nelson Ward. Ward opened the first by walking.

Corpus Christi (16-15) pulled ahead the next frame against Bryce Morrow (0-4) courtesy of James Ramsay's sacrifice fly and an Alfredo Gonzalez RBI single. Evan Gattis, J.D. Davis (double) and Conrad Gregor posted hits in the uprising as well.

The advantage was temporary, San Antonio (10-22) cooking up two-out trouble and a 3-2 lead as Nick Torres followed Jose Rondon's single with his fourth home run.

That lead held until the fifth when Bregman powered his seventh round-tripper of 2016 to left, Jack Mayfield aboard via a one-out single.

Martes (2-2) left in favor of Cotton after Taylor Lindsey's sixth-inning lead-off single. Martes permitted six hits, walked two, and struck out three in a 79-pitch performance (52 strikes).

Morrow, who worked six complete, allowed seven hits and struck out five.

Schulz had three hits and finished a home run shy of the cycle.

After an off day Wednesday, the Hooks change opponents as 23-7 Frisco comes to town. Cy Sneed (1-1) takes the ball for Corpus Christi vs. Connor Sadzeck (4-0). It's Thirsty Thursday, with discounted beer and soda from Stripes.
