Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - J.D. Davis capped a three-for-four night with a 427-foot home run off the batter's eye in center field as Corpus Christi bounced San Antonio 8-5 Monday at Whataburger Field before 4,010.
Davis' two-run, eighth-inning shot off Ramon Benjamin came on a 1-1, 94-mph offering. The Hooks third baseman fell a triple shy of the cycle.
Reymin Guduan, in his first action since April 28, picked up the save with a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts.
Set-up man Aaron West pitched around consecutive singles from Nick Schulz and Mike Olt to open the eighth. West whiffed three over 1 2/3 innings.
San Antonio nicked Brian Holmes for an unearned run in the first. Nelson Ward's bunt single opened the game and Jose Rondon followed, slapping the ball at first baseman Conrad Gregor. Gregor retired Rondon unassisted, but his throw to shortstop Alex Bregman for an intended tag play was wide of the second-base bag, and Ward achieved third. Nick Torres then lined an RBI single to left past a drawn-in infield.
The Missions endured a nightmarish turn in the field, Corpus Christi taking full advantage of Johnny Hellweg's wildness and lack of command. After Teoscar Hernandez laced a lead-off single into left, Hellweg (1-4) struck Bregman with a pitch and walked Derek Fisher. The Hooks' first run crossed when Evan Gattis bounced into a double play. Hellweg walked Chase McDonald ahead of James Ramsay's RBI double and a two-run single by Davis. That was it for Hellweg, who threw 37 pitches and turned the game over to Kyle Bartsch.
Rondon's first home run - a two-out blast over the left-field berm - cut the Corpus Christi advantage to 4-2.
Mott Hyde's one-out single picked up Davis (lead-off double) during the fourth to restore a three-run cushion.
It became a four-run bulge the next frame, Bregman taking new reliever Rafael De Paula deep to left on his initial pitch, a 91-mph fastball.
San Antonio pushed across three runs on three hits and three walks in response. Torres' one-out RBI triple chased Holmes, and Schulz greeted Michael Freeman by dropping a single into right, plating Torres. Freeman issued a bases-loaded, two-out walk to Chase Jensen.
Holmes (2-1) covered 5 1/3 innings over 90 pitches (57 strikes), yielding five hits and a walk. He struck out seven.
Tuesday is Half-Price Group Night and Mike Shaw Automotive Family Night as the series continues at 7:05. Corpus Christi pits Francis Martes (1-2) vs. Bryce Morrow (0-3).
