Augusta Lynx News Release

The Columbia Inferno scored twice in the first period to grab a lead they would never relinquish in a 5-2 win over the Augusta Lynx Saturday night.

Mike Stathopoulos scored the first goal and set up the second for Columbia in the period, tipping home a Marc-Andre Bernier pass at 7:16 to open the scoring. Stathopoulos later fed Derek Eastman at the left point on an Inferno power play, who in turn found Brandon Nolan open on the opposite wing, feeding him a pass that enabled him to beat Jason Wolfe and make it 2-0 Columbia after one period of play.

Eastman put the Inferno up 3-2 with an early power play goal just 54 seconds into the middle frame, but the Lynx would come back. Brian Passmore scored twice in the period, with both goals set up by Anthony Battaglia to make it 3-2.

From there, the bounces definitely went against the Lynx. A shorthanded 2-on-1 for the Inferno resulted in an own-goal by a Lynx defender, and then Jeff Mason appeared to beat goaltender Chris Houle over the left shoulder and ring the puck back out quickly off the inside bar. But after a consultation with the goal judge the score was waived off and the teams went to the locker room with Augusta down 4-2.

Despite a pair of five-on-three power plays Augusta could not score again in the game. During one of the power plays, Augusta put home a rebound but after the play had been whistled dead resulting in no goal.

Finally, Stathopoulos would tack on an insurance marker for the Inferno at 17:24 of the final frame to give his team the 5-2 win.

Augusta will next face the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Wednesday night at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center, with puck drop slated for 7:35 pm.
