Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, Idaho - Marty Flichel's three-point effort powered the Steelheads past the visiting Phoenix RoadRunners by a score of 5-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,048 from Qwest Arena on Saturday night.

With the victory, the Steelheads (32-18-7) completed a three-game sweep of the RoadRunners (18-34-3), while moving past the Utah Grizzlies for third place in the West division, pending the outcome of the Grizzlies tilt in Alaska. The win also puts the Steelheads at a season-high, 14 games over .500.

After a scoreless first period, the Steelheads exploded for three, second period tallies, to take command of the contest. Just 2:30 into the second period, Matt Reid got to a carom off the end boards and fired a shot into the top corner past goaltender Mike Mole (14 saves) for his fourth goal of the season. David Bararuk and Jeremy Yablonski added the assists.

At 8:46 of the frame, Jarad Bourassa received a Kurt MacSweyn offering and put a wrist shot over the glove of Mole to make the score 2-0. Dan Hacker recorded the other helper on Bourassa's 10th of the season.

Only 63 seconds later, Marty Flichel netted his 20th of the season, as he picked up a bouncing puck in the slot and lifted it into an empty cage. D'Arcy McConvey earned his 60th point of the season on the play, while Bourassa chipped in his 20th assist.

Mole was yanked in favor of Ryan Cyr (16 saves) after Flichel's goal gave the Steelheads a 3-0 lead.

The home team padded its advantage early in the third period, scoring 2:50 into the third period, as David Bararuk deflected a nice feed from Flichel from just outside the crease. McConvey redgistered his 19th multiple point game of the season on the marker, adding his second assist of the night on Bararuk's 20th of the campaign.

It became 5-0 at 12:22 of the third on Flichel's second of the contest. Defenseman Tony Johnson took the initial shot, and Flichel cleaned up the rebound for number 21 on the year.

The RoadRunners snapped a 147:36 drought, scoring for the first time since the first game of the series with just 2:02 left in regulation. Shawn Snider's wrister from the right circles hit Justin Quenneville in the chest and flew past Steelheads' goaltender Matt Yeats (24 saves). The goal was Quenneville's ninth of the season.

The final shots were 35-25, as the Steelheads jumped to 15-10-5 on home ice and 24-10-4 when they out-shoot their opponent.

The Steelheads won the season series with the RoadRunners convincingly, taking all seven games by a combined score of 34-10.

The Steelheads return to action on Friday, March 10, as they travel to Anchorage to take on the Alaska Aces. The puck drops at 9:15 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
