San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Tyler Weiman stopped 29 shots for his first shutout as a Gull, leading San Diego to its initial win over the Las Vegas Wranglers this season, 1-0 Saturday night before 10,337 at ipayOne Center. It marked the first 1-0 game in the history of the ipayOne Center.
On Disco Night, the Gulls (26-24-5) finally found a way to beat the Wranglers (40-10-6), who won the first five meetings between the two teams this year. Las Vegas had out-scored San Diego 29-11 in those match-ups but couldn't find the back of the net Saturday because Weiman made key save after key save.
The victory pulls the Gulls back into a third-place tie with Bakersfield in the Pacific Division with 57 points apiece. They have now won seven of their last nine games. Saturday night, they dealt the Wranglers just their third loss in their last 15 matches and only their second shutout of the year.
The opening two periods went exactly how the Gulls wanted, as neither team had many scoring chances. And Weiman stopped each opportunity the Wranglers did manage for 21 total saves through 40 minutes.
The Gulls, meanwhile, capitalized on one of their few chances when red-hot Mark Wires scored his fifth goal in eight games - and second in as many nights against Las Vegas - 10:06 into the match. On the power play, Steve Hildenbrand took a shot from the left-wing circle, got his own rebound and fed a wide-open Wires to the left of the net. And the forward buried a wrister top shelf to give the Gulls the 1-0 lead. During his last eight games, Wires now has 11 points (5g, 6a).
Not much happened in the second period, when the two clubs combined for 19 shots but no penalties and zero goals.
In the third, San Diego had to hold off the Wranglers. When Chris Cava went in the penalty box for a delay of game with 1:35 remaining, Las Vegas pulled its goalie for a six-on-four skater advantage. But Weiman and the Gulls defense didn't allow anything en route to the shutout.
The game ended a tough stretch for San Diego, which played its eighth match in 11 days. But the Gulls went 6-2-0 in those contests, including a season-best five-match winning streak, which ended in a 6-2 defeat to the Wranglers Friday at home.
Notes: The trio of Steve Crampton (6g, 4a), Dan Tudin (4g, 6a) and Matt Dzieduszycki (3g, 11a) had combined for 34 points (13g, 21a) in five games against the Gulls this season before being shut out Saturday... Over his last six periods against Las Vegas, Weiman has allowed only two goals on 55 shots (96.4 percent)... The Gulls are 28 points ahead of Stockton for the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division... Out of San Diego's last 17 games, 12 have been decided by one goal... In the Gulls' final 17 regular season games, nine are against teams over .500... In the Gulls' final eight home games, five are against teams over .500... Sebastien Fortier suffered a concussion Friday night and was placed on the seven-day injured list Saturday...
The Gulls close out their four-game homestand Wednesday, as the Dayton Bombers make their first-ever trip to San Diego. Game-time is set for 7:05 p.m. San Diego will play in Fresno Friday and Long Beach Saturday, March 11 before hosting Fresno Sunday, March 12. All games can be heard on KLSD 1360AM and www.sandiegogulls.com with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. Most games can also be viewed on the Gulls' web site, courtesy of B2 Networks.
