Phoenix RoadRunners
Hell has a couple different variations depending on your background. Most people associate hell with being hot and eternally fiery. In the Norse and Swahili religions, hell is a place of bone-chilling eternal cold. For the Phoenix Roadrunners, they were in both kinds of hell after Friday night's 1-0 loss to the Idaho Steelheads.
Phoenix (18-33-3) may be hot as hell during the summer but the Roadrunners' offense is like Norse hell after getting shutout for the third time in their last five games and 10th time this season. The lone goal came from Jeremy Mylymok when his one-time blast from the deep slot eluded Phoenix netminder Ryan Cyr at 5:32 of the second period. D'Arcy McConvey and Greg Hornby picked up the assists on the only goal of the night.
Cyr kept the Roadrunners in it with a 38-save effort but the offense only managed 21 shots and failed to crack Idaho goaltender Steve Silverthorn. The Steelheads (31-18-7) have beaten Phoenix all six times this year and will look to make it seven when the teams meet again Saturday night at Qwest Arena in Boise.
Phoenix tried to knot the score when they pulled Cyr with 38 seconds left but failed to get the equalizer. Each team finished 0-for-4 on the power play and Phoenix dropped its fifth straight game.
The Roadrunners frustration was evident as there were four fights in the game and J.F. Soucy was given a game misconduct for reportedly firing the puck at referee Matt Bialotta. On his way out, Soucy showed how upset he was by using his stick to smack the awning over the entrance to the visitors' locker room and ripping it partly down.
Phoenix will try to avert the season series shutout in Saturday's finale but need to generate some offense to avoid going 0-for-7 against Idaho.
Three Stars
3. Silverthorn-IDH 21-save shutout
2. Cyr-PHX Stopped 37 shots, kept his team in striking distance
1. Mylymok-IDH Game-winning goal
Notes: Both of Silverthorn's professional shutouts are against Phoenix...Cyr hasn't won professionally and is 0-7-0 this year...Phoenix gave up the first goal for the eighth straight game and a league-high 40th time this season...Phoenix has the second fewest chances on the power play while Idaho has the second most...With his assist, McConvey became the 10th player in the ECHL with 60 or more points this year...Soucy's game misconduct gave the Roadrunners a league-high 16 of them, Columbia is next with 13...Idaho is 27-1-2 when leading after two periods and 13-0-2 at home...Phoenix is the only team in the ECHL without a 30-point scorer...The "tragic number" for Phoenix to be officially eliminated from the playoffs is six; if Idaho wins Saturday night, it will dip to just two...Attendance was 4,421.
