THE FUEL REVIEW: Returning to the friendly climes and environs of their home ice of the Indiana Farmers Coliseum, the Indy Fuel gathered one precious point in the fiercely-competitive, hotly-contested ECHL Western Conference Central Division standings in a two-games' home-and-home weekend home stand. Under the tutelage of Head Coach Bernie John, the men of the Fuel were making their first appearance in their own home lair following a two-weeks' three-game foreign ice excursion. For a second consecutive Friday night, the Fuel tussled with undefeated, league-leading Tulsa, making matters much closer the second time around in a 3-2 setback. Indy nearly surmounted a rather daunting 3-0 deficit by rallying with a pair of third period strikes before the home team simply ran out of time. Marek Tvrdon (1) on the Fuel's first PPG of the season and Patrick D'Amico (1) connected 3:11 apart before the Oilers ultimately prevailed. Then on Saturday night, in a thrilling, entertaining contest, the Fuel earned a single point, halting a 3-game losing spell in a 7-6 OT affair against 4-time champion Allen. Though not achieving ultimate victory, the Fuel, nevertheless, were gallant and resilient, overcoming three deficits to actually seize two third period leads of 5-4 and 6-5 before the Americans extracted the bonus point with some dramatic late theatre and histrionics to utterly snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Tvrdon connected twice, including his 2nd PPG; Kevin Lynch (1-1-2), Tyler Currier (GTG), D'Amico (GTG) and Brady Ramsay (TBG) were the Fuel sharpshooters.
THE 11TH MONTH BEGINS: Completing the month of October with a 6(2-3-1) record, the Fuel will launch an ambitious 12-games' slate for November with a pair of early season, key clashes within their own Central Division. Indy's finest on ice will sojourn to Fort Wayne Friday night for an 8:00 pm showdown against their principal archenemies, the Komets. Fort Wayne 5(4-1-0)8-points claimed the season series in '15-16 from the Fuel who were 11(4-5-2) against the K's. The Fuel's lone home appearance for this week is on the docket for Saturday night when the Quad City Mallards 6(4-2-0)8-points make their first trip here for this year. Indy dominated the "Quack Attack" last season, posting a 10(7-2-1) mark in 10-meetings.
PUCKS & PAWS: Presented by Church Brothers Collision Repair, it will be "Pucks & Paws" Night Saturday night when the Fuel collide with the Mallards. It's a night for our four-legged companions. A few furry friends will be making special appearances while Fuel fans can make a major difference in an animal's life by bringing dog food to donate to Indiana Canine Assistant Network. In addition, the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a pet bowl courtesy of Church Brothers Collision Repair.
SEE FUEL TV: Televising live 23 Fuel home games this season through TV/Radio simulcast, WTHR-TV 13 (NBC) and COZI-TV, the Fuel's next telecast/simulcast is set for this Saturday night, November 5th when the Fuel play host to Quad City. The Fuel exclusive radio flagship home of CBS Sports 1430 has all the games as Terry Ficorelli will be joined by Bob Kravitz and Talor Whitaker.
WEEKLY NOMINEE: The Fuel have nominated left wing Marek Tvrdon for Sher-Wood/ECHL Player of the Week. The 23-year old 4th year pro delivered his first 3-goals of the young season in the 2-games the past weekend; 2(3-0-3), including Indy's first 2-PPG of the year. The former NHL Detroit Red Wings 4th round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft was named the game's #2 Star in each game. For the season, he is 6(3-1-4).
MONTHLY RETURNS: Indy has submitted in nomination for Sher-Wood/ECHL Player of the Month, left wing Alex Wideman with goaltender Jake Hildebrand gaining the nomination for CCM Goaltender of the Month as well as ECHL Rookie of the Month. Wideman, the second-year pro from the U. Miami Ohio, emerged as the club's top scoring virtuoso for the month with 6(3-3-6). His offensive output included 2-GWG in his team's first two games of the season and overall win total as well. As for Hildebrand, the Michigan State All-American started 5 of the Fuel's 6-dates for the month, recording a mark of 5(2-2-1) with a 3.59 GAA and .888 SPCT. Hildebrand won his and his team's first 2-starts of the campaign, achieving the game's #1 Star in each victory, attaining the honor of the first CCM/ECHL Goaltender of the Week for the '16-17 campaign.
POINT-MAKING MEISTERS: Through the first month of the Fuel's third ECHL season, the team's top point-producing purveyors are in order: 1- Alex Wideman 6(3-3-6); 2- Tyler Currier 6(3-2-5); 3- Kevin Lynch 6(1-4-5); 4- Marek Tvrdon 6(3-1-4); 5- Nick Mattson 6(0-4-4); 6- Jonathan Carlsson 6(0-3-3); 7- Patrick D'Amico 6(2-0-2); 8- Anthony Beauregard 6(1-1-2).
FUEL DEBUT: Two first-year newcomers made their Fuel debuts the past Saturday night against Allen with both making a positive account of themselves in their overall contribution to the club. Left wing Bryn Chyzyk, assigned earlier in the day to Indy by AHL Rockford, engineered 2-primary assists in his premiere appearance. The product of national collegiate hockey power U. of North Dakota arranged a first period GTG for Patrick D'Amico before authoring the set-up on Brady Ramsay's late TBG at 17:42 of the third period. Meanwhile defenseman Chris Williams left an indelible impression as well, attaining a +1 rating and stepping up to meet the challenge in an altercation in the form of a fistic debate.
POWER PLAY PERCOLATES: The Fuel power play came out of hibernation the past weekend, spearheaded by left wing Marek Tvrdon. Indy halted a season-opening 0-11 drought in game 5 Friday night against Tulsa before performing an encore of its scoring exploits in Saturday night's OT affair against Allen. Tvrdon was the imperial marksman on both extra man strikes. The power play has now connected on 2 of its last 3-advantages. As it has been since opening night, the Fuel penalty-killing cast has been extraordinary. The opposition's power play is only 2-17 for a Fuel efficiency rating of a sparkling 88.2%. Indy has permitted PPGA in only one game thus far this season, blanking the adversary's extra man efforts in 5 of the first 6-games.
FUEL FACTS: The Fuel's 6-goal output Saturday night doubled their previous season high for a single game which had been three. Four of the Fuel's first 6-games have been decided by a scant single goal margin, including the last 3-in a row. Indy is 4(1-2-1) in 1-goal verdicts and 3(0-2-1) in the latter trio. During their present tense 4-game winless spell, 4(0-3-1), 3 of those outcomes have been determined by that scant single goal differential. The Fuel's last win came back on the opening weekend, October 15th in the form of a 1-goal success at the expense of Cincinnati, 2-1. In Saturday night's contest against Allen, the Fuel did not skate shorthanded due to penalty time for the entire game. Indy was 6(2-4) in OT last season; 1(0-1) this season. The Fuel are 2(0-2-0) in their only 2-games within their own Central Division with both setbacks inflicted by first place Tulsa. After being outshot in their first 4-games of the season, the Fuel have outshot their opponents in each of the last 2-games, setting season highs on consecutive nights. Friday night, they outshot Tulsa 36-32; Saturday night, it was 43-40 over Allen, though the 40-shots for Allen were the most surrendered by Indy this year. After scoring the game's FG in each of their first 2-games, both victories, the Fuel have allotted the game's FG to the opponents the last 4-games consecutively, going 4(0-3-1) in the process. Through its first 6-games, Indy has trailed after the first period only once. Marek Tvrdon and Patrick D'Amico have notched goals in each of the club's last 2-outings.
