Heading south
The Jackals hit the road for their longest road trip of the season to date, heading south to face the South Carolina Stingrays and Atlanta Gladiators in the only games against those teams this season. The Jackals visit South Carolina Thursday and Sunday while stopping in Atlanta Friday.
It's the second straight year the Jackals will play at North Charleston Coliseum against the Stingrays; they split two games there last year. Elmira last played a road game against the Gladiators in 2014-15, winning once and losing once.
Other trips south for the Jackals include two weekend visits to Norfolk and a three-game set in Florida against the Everblades in December.
Game 4: John Muse shuts down Thunder in 2-1 shootout win
John Muse made 39 saves in regulation and overtime while Tyson Fawcett scored the only goal in the shootout as the Jackals edged the Adirondack Thunder, 2-1, Tuesday at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Muse was the difference for the Jackals, keeping his team in the game during a first period that saw the Thunder outshoot the Jackals 19-3. Muse stopped all 19 in the period to keep it a 0-0 game entering the second. Adirondack got on the board in the second with Brian Ward snapping a shot in from the left circle at 1:12 of the period. It remained 1-0 Thunder until the Jackals pulled even with a power-play goal at 16:37 of the second. Steven Kaunisto found twine with a wrist shot from the high slot that got through traffic in front.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game went to a shootout where Fawcett scored in the bottom of round one and Muse shut the door on three Thunder shooters to give the Jackals the 2-1 win .
Game 5: Special teams costly as Jackals fall to Thunder, 5-2
The Adirondack Thunder scored two power-play goals and one shorthanded goal to beat the Jackals, 5-2, Friday at First Arena.
Greg Wolfe gave the Thunder a first-period lead at 13:58, deflecting a shot past goalie Andy Iles, making it 1-0. The Jackals pulled even in the second period as Sebastien Sylvestre beat Mason McDonald on a breakaway at 4:31. Adirondack reclaimed the lead with another power-play goal on a one-timer from Stepan Falkovsky at 10:19. After Phil Lane gave the Thunder a 3-1 lead less than two minutes later, the Jackals got back within one with a power-play goal of their own. Davis Vandane wristed home a shot from the high slot while on a 5-on-3 advantage to make it 3-2.
The Thunder rebuild the lead to two late in the second, getting a shorthanded goal from Lane with a minute to play in the period, making it 4-2 moving into the third. The Thunder put the game away with an empty-net goal in the third .
Game 6: Andy Iles strong in defeat as the Jackals lose, 3-0, to Thunder
Andy Iles made 37 saves, but the Jackals offense mustered just eight shots as they were shut out by the Adirondack Thunder, 3-0, Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Iles was excellent again for the Jackals, making 26 saves through the first 40 minutes to keep the game tied 0-0 heading to the third period. The Thunder finally broke the tie 2:45 into the third period, with Mikkel Aagaard pouncing on a rebound near the right circle to give Adirondack a 1-0 lead. It stayed 1-0 until back-to-back goals for Adirondack just 20 seconds apart. First, Brian Ward buried a cross-ice pass from Aagaard at 13:02. 20 seconds later it was Phil Lane who converted on a pass from Peter MacArthur to make it 3-0.
The Jackals ended with just one third-period shot and finished with eight total for the game, matching an ECHL record, set by the Trenton Devils against the Jackals in 2009 .
Week Ahead
Game 7: Thu., Nov. 3 at South Carolina Stingrays, 7:05 p.m.
Game 9: Sun., Nov. 6 at South Carolina Stingrays, 3:05 p.m .
The Jackals turn the page on October and open November with a road trip against the South Division, starting with a match Thursday night against the South Carolina Stingrays. The teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum to wrap up the week in their only two games head-to-head this season.
The Stingrays, last season's South Division champion, are off to a slow start in 2016-17, going 1-3-1-0 in their first five games. With just three points, they are fifth in the seven-team South Division and 12th overall in the Eastern Conference. They picked up their first win of the season, 2-1 in overtime, Friday against Florida. The Stingrays open the week Tuesday against Orlando before playing two against the Jackals.
Last season the teams split their two-game series, with both games in South Carolina. The Jackals won the first game, 2-0, Nov. 6 before the Stingrays responded with a 4-1 victory Nov. 7. The Stingrays currently have six players on their roster who spent time in South Carolina last season. No returning player had a point against the Jackals last season. This season, Olivier Archambault (3g), Danny New (1g, 2a) and Kelly Zajac (3a) lead the team in scoring with three points each.
In goal, Adam Carlson and Parker Milner have split time through five games. Milner has started three games, but is still searching for a win. He is 0-2-1 with a 3.28 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage. Carlson, 22, is in his rookie season and is 1-1-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.
Game 8: Fri., Nov. 4 at Atlanta Gladiators, 7:35 p.m.
The Jackals play the middle game of their three-game trip down south with a visit to the Atlanta Gladiators Friday night. It's the first trip to Atlanta for the Jackals since the 2014-15 season, when the teams split two games in January. Friday will be the only regular-season match between the clubs this season.
The Gladiators lead the league with nine games played after three weeks and they have a 4-3-1-1 record. With 10 points, Atlanta is first in the South Division and tied for first in the Eastern Conference with Adirondack, although every team in the conference has at least two games in hand on the Glads.
Atlanta ranks sixth in the ECHL in scoring, averaging 3.78 goals per game. They boosted that number with an 8-2 win over Orlando Saturday night, matching the most goals scored in a game in the league this season. Brock Higgs leads the Gladiators in scoring with 10 points (2g, 8a) in nine games while Derek Nesbitt is second with nine points (5g, 4a).
Four players have seen time in net for the Gladiators thus far, but Matt Ginn leads the way with five appearances. In those games, he is 2-2-1 with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage. In four games this season an Atlanta goalie has made more than 40 saves and the Glads record is 3-0-1-0 in those games.
