Indians Ride Big 5th Inning to 10-3 Victory Over Hawks

July 20, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA -After being held to just one hit in four innings by Hawks starter Yao-Ling Wang, the Indians lineup was thrilled to see reliever Jose Rosario (1-3) on the mound to start the fifth inning. Spokane's offense greeted Rosario rudely and took full advantage of Boise's bullpen woes, scoring seven runs in the inning on their way to a 10-3 victory in front of 4,150 fans for Baseball Hat Giveaway Night presented by Pepsi, Arby's, and The Inlander at Avista Stadium.

Indians starter Victor Payano held the Hawks to just two runs in four innings on the strength of three double plays, but left the game trailing 2-0. That's when Spokane's offense came to the rescue, taking the lead on a two-run triple from Rougned Odor that scored Hanser Alberto, Hirotoshi Onaka, and eventually Odor following a Boise throwing error.

Run scoring hits from Brett Nicholas and Guillermo Pimentel pushed the Indians lead to 5-2 and Drew Robinson capped the fifth inning scoring explosion with a two-run double to leftfield.

Phil Klein (1-0) made quite a first impression in his debut at Avista Stadium, picking up the win after twirling three scoreless innings. The tall right-hander from Youngstown State struck out five Hawks batters in relief of Payano.

The win kept Spokane tied with Tri-City for first place in the Northwest League Eastern Division.
