Indianapolis Indians News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio -Trailing 8-0 at the end of the second inning, the Indianapolis Indians came back to tie the game at 8-8 before falling to the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park on Saturday night, 10-9.
The Indians (23-26) were blanked through the first six innings by Clippers starter Gavin Williams, but broke through in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI double down the left field line from designated hitter Mark Mathias and a sacrifice fly from center fielder Chavez Young.
A six-run top of the eighth followed, highlighted by second baseman Aaron Shackelford's fourth home run in his last three games to cut the lead to three. Aside from Shackelford's blast, the runs came in on an RBI double by left fielder Miguel Andújar, a bases-loaded walk issued to Young, an RBI single on a looping line drive to left from third baseman Nick Gonzales and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Canaan Smith-Njigba.
The Clippers (25-24) took control of the game for good in the bottom half of the eighth inning thanks to an RBI double from designated hitter Bo Naylor and a sacrifice fly off the bat of left fielder Oscar Gonzalez against Indians reliever Hunter Stratton (L, 0-2). Mathias laced another run-producing double off Columbus reliever Caleb Baragar (W, 2-0) in the top of the ninth, but the two-run bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference.
Columbus jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings in large part due to eight walks being issued by Indians pitching in the first two frames. Overall, the two pitching staffs combined to walks 22 hitters and throw a combined 349 pitches on Saturday night. The only pitcher for either side to throw 1.0 inning or more and not walk multiple hitters was Indianapolis reliever Eli Villalobos, who threw 3.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball.
The Indians and Clippers conclude their series at Huntington Park on Sunday at 1:05 PM ET. Right- hander Aaron Civale (0-0, 2.84) continues his rehab assignment with Columbus, while the Indians have yet to announce a starting pitcher.
