Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Starting pitcher Yoslan Herrera along with relievers Jeff Sues and Jean Machi combined on a three-hit shutout, while right fielder Jose Tabata scored twice to lead the Indianapolis Indians over the Toledo Mud Hens 3-0 on Tuesday night at Victory Field.

With the win the Indians improve to 69-68 overall and 36-32 at home, while the Mud Hens fall to 69-68 overall and 32-26 on the road with the loss. The win for Indianapolis evens the current series at one game apiece and gives them an 11-9 advantage in the season series.

In just his second career Triple-A start, Herrera (5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) earned the victory after he allowed just three singles and struck out three in 5.1 innings of work. The victory was the right hander's 12th overall this season between Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis, ranking him behind only recent Pittsburgh call-up Daniel McCutchen's 13 wins for the most victories by any pitcher in the Pirates' organization.

Both Sues (2.2 IP, 1 BB) and Machi (1.0 IP, 1 SO) took over right where Herrera left off as the Tribe relievers combined for 3.2 innings of hitless relief allowing just one walk and striking out one as well. With their efforts Sues earned his third hold of the season, while Machi picked up the save to remain a perfect five-for-five in save opportunities this season.

While the pitching staff shut down the Mud Hens and earned their eighth shutout of the season, the entire Tribe offense came from the middle of their order as Tabata, LF Tagg Bozied and 1B Larry Broadway combined to collect all five hits and all three runs.

Tabata, who entered the game in the second inning sparked the only rally the Indians' ended up needing as he ripped a one-out double to right in the fourth and came around to score the game-winning tally on a base hit by Broadway. When Broadway, lifted his single to right field, Tabata sped home and used a spectacular hook slide to avoid the catcher and swipe the plate for the first run of the contest.

In-between the base knocks by Tabata and Broadway, Bozied drew a base-on-balls, and after moving to third on Broadway's single, trotted home when DH Hector Gimenez collected an RBI groundout. Bozied also drove in the Tribe's third run of the contest, when he blasted a double to center field in the sixth to bring home Tabata, who led off the frame with a walk.

With his 2-for-3 effort, Bozied has now reached base in 26 of his last 28 contests during which time he has raised his average over 80 points (.200 to .284), scored 23 runs, and driven in 12. For Tabata his two-run performance gives him six runs scored over his last four games during which time he has also collected four hits and three walks.

Toledo starter Brooks Brown (7.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 SO) was a tough luck loser as he took the loss to drop to 3-12 on the season despite allowing just three runs on three hits. Brown pitched well over his seven frames of work, but didn't receive any run support as the Mud Hens only collected singles from 3B Mike Hessman, 1B Max Leon and SS Andy Ciriaco.

Indianapolis wraps up there three-game series against Toledo on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. LHP Ryan Ketchner is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Eric Hacker is expected to get the nod for the Mud Hens.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.

Post-game quote -- OF Tagg Bozied

(on the advantages of scoring first)

"It helps out a lot because we have good command guys in our starting rotation. When you get ahead you are going to play more aggressive on the bases, and mentally that is a huge edge. In the wins that we had in the month of August, that was a huge part of it."

(on the double that gave the Indians the lead)

"Brown (Mud Hens RHP Brooks Brown) had a good sinker and with guys like that, you try to get a ball up. I figured he was going to try to pitch me into a double-play with a fastball, but fortunately I was able to get a pitch up. I got a pretty good swing on it and luckily, Tabata (Indians RF Jose Tabata) can really run."
