Matthews (NC) - The Charlotte Independence professional soccer hammered Birmingham Legion FC 4-1 in front of a regular-season record crowd of 3,544 at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Saturday night. After being squared at 1-1 through the first 45 minutes, Independence forward Enzo Martinez netted his first goal of the season, which would prove to be the game-winner.
On Health and Wellness Night presented by Novant Health, the Charlotte Independence struck first as Andrew Gutman cleaned up a deflected corner kick, earning a 7th-minute lead. Mid-way through the first half, Legion forward Prosper Kasim scored his 3rd goal of the season.
In the second half, the Independence would roar back with three unanswered goals from Enzo Martinez, Jorge Herrera, and Abdoulie Mansally. The offensive explosion matched a season-high for goals in a half and was the season-high for goals in a game.
The Independence will next be in action in USL Championship play this Saturday when the team travels to take on Louisville City FC at Slugger Field. The Independence will return home on Saturday, June 29th as expansion side Memphis 901 FC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews.
