Independence Draw Loudoun in Six Goal Shootout
August 9, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charlotte Independence News Release
Leesburg (VA) - The Charlotte Independence gained a point on the road against Loudoun United FC on Friday night as each away scored was responded with a home counter. Independence midfielder Valentine Sabella scored his first professional goal, while Jorge Herrera netted his 71st career USL Championship regular season goal, which ties the 38-year-old with Indy Eleven forward Dane Kelly for the league record.
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup hero for the Florida Soccer Soliders, turned Independence rookie, Valentin Sabella opened up the scoring in the first half. Niki Jackson's shot was swept off the goal line by a Loudoun defender, when Afrim Taku picked out a wide-open Sabella for the 20-year-olds first professional goal.
Entering the second half tied at a goal per side, Independence midfielder Afrim Taku once again picked out the final pass this time to Jorge Herrera. Temporarily the Independence would hold the lead until a 65th minute goal by Loudoun forward Antonio Bustamante.
In the closing stages of the match, Herrera would continue his strong performance, this time lofting a perfectly weighted ball to substitute Dominic Oduro. The headed goal was Oduro's seventh of the season, good for the team-high.
The Independence will continue in USL Championship action this Saturday, August 17th when Nashville SC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews. The game is presented by Duckworth's Grill and TapHouse. Tickets are on sale at charlotteindependence.com.
