Idaho takes game two of series with 5-2 road win over Victoria

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night matchup at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Salmon Kings took on the Idaho Steelheads in the second game of a three-game set. The Salmon Kings gave the nod to Darren Machesney, while Tyler Beskorowany was between the pipes for the Steelheads.

Victoria scored the game's first goal at the 13:18 mark while on the power play. P.J. Atherton took a pass from Rob Hennigar and blasted a shot from the point that banked off the cross-bar and in. The tally was Atherton's second of the year. The Steelheads tied the game just over a minute later when John Swanson netted his first goal of the season as he collected his own rebound off a shot from the right face-off circle and tucked past the Victoria netminder. The period ended with both teams deadlocked at 1-1.

The Salmon Kings restored their lead at 5:53 while on a man-advantage when Hennigar set-up Rick Cleaver with a cross-crease pass which was converted past Beskorowany glove side. The marker gave Cleaver three on the campaign. Idaho responded only minutes later when Swanson registered his second of the night on a shot that beat Machesney through the legs. The Steelheads took their first lead of the game at the 12:52 mark when Matt Tassone skated in on a breakaway and scored his first of the year to pick up his first of the year. After forty minutes, the Steelheads carried a 3-2 advantage.

Idaho extended their advantage in the third period with the special teams as Marty Flichel collected two power play goals from the blue line at the 1:53 and 2:56 marks. The goals were Flichel's third and fourth of the season and rounded out the scoring for the game. Steelheads 5 Salmon Kings 2.

Victoria went 2/7=28.5% on the power play, while Idaho was 2/8=25.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Steelheads 32-24.

The Salmon Kings wrap up their three-game set vs. the Idaho Steelheads tomorrow night at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre with puck drop at 7:05. Tomorrow night's contest is "Canadian Armed Forces" night, where the Salmon Kings will celebrate the men and women of uniform as well as the Navy Centennial. The team will be wearing commemorative Navy centennial jerseys, while a select number will be auctioned off live following the game. Also, great Military displays and exhibits will be on-site! A ceremonial puck drop will also be executed by the Search and Rescue Technician (SAR Tech) team by way of rappelling from the arena's rafters.
