CHARLESTON, SC - The Florida Everblades (6-4-0) used a pair of second period goals and strong goaltending from Jaroslav Janus to earn a 2-1 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays (3-4-0) on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum in front of a crowd of 3,787.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Stingrays out-shoot the Everblades 13-7, the Everblades came to life in the second period, notching a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. The first of the two goals came off the stick of Mathieu Roy at 5:53 after being left alone at the top of the Stingrays crease. Mike Kennedy's pass found him alone on the door step where Roy lifted a back-hander over the left shoulder of South Carolina goalie Shane Connolly. Phil Paquet added an assist on Roy's fourth tally of the year.
Late in the frame the Everblades added to their lead with a power play goal at 18:06. Alex Hutchings was the recipient of a nice passing play with the Everblades on a 5-on-3 man advanatage. Mitch Fadden fed a pass from the bottom of the right circle across the goal mouth where Hutchings hammered home the power
Marker. Elgin Reid tacked on an assist on Hutchings' third goal of the season.
Down by two goals the Stingrays came out flying in the third period pressuring from start to finish, holding the Everblades to three shots in the period while firing 11 on Janus. South Carolina used a strong start to the period to cut the Everblades lead to one with Jake Hauswirth's second goal of the season just 54 seconds into the period.
The Stringrays continued to pressure as time wound down, but Janus made some big saves to keep South Carolina from finding the equalizer.
In goal Janus picked up his second straight win stopping 39 of 40 shots to improve to 3-2-0, while Connolly took the tough-luck loss allowing the two goals on 19 shots, dropping his record to 2-1-0.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-of-6, while South Carolina closed out the game 0-of-6.
