Norfolk Admirals News Release
ROCKFORD, IL - Radek Smolenak recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick in his second straight game for the Admirals and Jamie Heward scored a goal in his Norfolk debut. However, the Norfolk Admirals (1-2-0-2) fell in a shootout to the Rockford IceHogs (5-1-0-0) 5-4 on Friday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.
Rockford took a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes. Former Admiral Rob Klinkhammer scored off his own rebound at 1:42. Jean-Claude Sawyer's slap shot from the left half wall eluded Norfolk netminder Karri Ramo at 16:18.
Tim Brent gave the IceHogs a 3-0 lead with a power play goal exactly one minute into the second stanza.
However, the remainder of the second period belonged to Norfolk. Radek Smolenak collected the rebound of a Brandon Segal shot in the slot and sent a shot top-shelf at 7:31.
Smolenak then set up Norfolk's second goal just over nine minutes later. Smolenak sent a backhanded feed from the right faceoff circle that Brandon Bochenski re-directed five-hole on former Admirals and current IceHogs netminder Corey Crawford at 16:50.
The Admirals tied the game at 3-3 just over a minute later. Blair Jones sent a backhander top-shelf, stick-side at 17:54.
Jamie Heward's first Admirals goal in his first Admirals game put Norfolk on top 4-3 early in the third period. While on the power play, Heward sent a wrister through a screen from the high slot that eluded Crawford 24 seconds into the third period.
Pascal Pelletier leveled the game at four goals apiece when his backhander from the slot snuck through Ramo's legs at 10:03.
Ramo came up huge for Norfolk in the overtime, making 12 stops. However, Rockford out-scored Norfolk 3-1 in the shootout to win the game.
Karri Ramo (43 shots, 39 saves) was saddled with the shootout loss. Corey Crawford (32 shots, 28 saves) got the win.
Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Rockford was 1-3.
The Admirals and IceHogs will face off again tomorrow night in Rockford at 8:05 p.m. Norfolk then travels East to Grand Rapids to square off against the Griffins on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
