ST. JOHN'S, NL - Brendan Leipsic scored a hat trick as the Toronto Marlies bested the St. John's IceCaps 6-3 Saturday night at Mile One Centre in the first of two weekend matchups.
Bud Holloway, Charles Hudon and Daniel Carr scored for St. John's, which dropped its fifth straight game. Eddie Pasquale started in goal but allowed four goals on eight shots before being replaced by Zach Fucale.
The teams combined for six goals in the opening frame, with the Marlies leading 4-2 after 20 minutes.
The two clubs square off for the eighth time this season Sunday afternoon (4:00 PM NT). Fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Purolator Shut Out Hunger food drive in support of the Community Food Sharing Association.
