February 27, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

The Pensacola Ice Pilots played a hard fought game but dropped their second one in a shootout this season 5-4 to the Columbia Inferno on Tuesday night at Carolina Coliseum.

The Ice Pilots had good success this season in Columbia with three wins in four tries and were looking to notch their fourth win, but the Inferno scored a late goal shorthanded to tie the game 4-4 and then got the goals they need from their top goal scorers in a shootout.

The Ice Pilots hadn't played in a shootout since November against the Augusta Lynx.

The Ice Pilots had built a 4-3 lead in the third period when David Wrigley scored a power play goal and appeared to be in good shape until the equalizer from the Inferno.

The Ice Pilots raced out to a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Rene Gauthier when he deflected a shot past Todd Ford. Rich Meloche started the play with a good rush up the ice.

After the Inferno tied the game 1-1, the Ice Pilots took the lead when John Hecimovic notched his 18th on a rebound in front of the net. Rob Rankin and Jesse Baraniuk earned assists on the goal.

In the second period, the Inferno scored two goals to take a 3-2 lead but a short later the Ice Pilots tied the game on a spectacular goal from Sergei Ogorodnikov who went around three Columbia players and put the puck in behind goaltender Todd Ford when he was behind the goal line. Rene Gauthier and Rich Meloche earned assists on the goal.

The Ice Pilots had a five on three power play in the second period but couldn't score.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots return to action this Saturday and Sunday when they host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 pm and 6:05 pm respectively at The Hangar.
