Dayton Bombers News Release

Dayton, OH- The Dayton Bombers put an emphatic end to their three game losing streak by defeating the Toledo Storm 6-2 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center on Tuesday evening.

Terry Denike (29 saves, Win) would make his second consecutive start in goal for the Bombers and early in the first came up with some spectacular save to keep the Storm off the scoreboard. Feeding off the energy of Denike's stellar play, the Bombers drew the first penalty of the night and with it took the lead. Yannick Tifu (19) found a loose puck off a rebound left by Storm starter Dominic Vicari (29 saves, Loss) and buried it on the power play to give the Bombers the 1-0 edge at the 9:14 mark of the first period. Then later in the first, Joe Cullen (9) made it 2-0 at the 15:33 mark when he let go of a missile from the slot that beat Vicari top shelf. The Bombers held onto to the two goal advantage after the first period of play.

It didn't take long for the Bombers to add to their lead in the second period. Matt Herneisen (13) made a sneaky little spin move around his man and snuck the puck underneath the crossbar to make it 3-0 at the 2:05 mark. Toledo cut the lead back down to two just over three minutes later, when Mike Walsh beat Denike with a shot off the draw to bring Toledo to 3-1 at the 5:33 mark. The Bombers answered Walsh's goal with another one at the 11:54 mark. That's when rookie defenseman Brad Farynuk (3) threw the puck towards the goal then saw it hit off a Storm defenseman and ricochet into the net to push the lead back to three at 4-1. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Ryan Reid (1) gave the Bombers some insurance with his first of the season at the 18:05 mark and the Bombers took a four goal lead to the locker room after 40 minutes of play.

Toledo showed signs of life early in the third when they brought themselves back within three off a wrist shot from the high slot by defenseman Dan Watson at the 3:46 mark. But as they had done throughout the night, the Bombers answered back. Paul Kelly (12) gave the Bombers a 6-2 lead by sliding one through the legs of Vicari to finish off a beautiful touch pass from Petr Pohl at the 6:32 mark. That's all the Bombers needed on the night and thanks to Denike's consistency Toledo was held scoreless the rest of the way in the Bombers 6-2 home win.

The Bombers are now 25-20-4 (54 pts.) on the season. They currently hold the 5th and final playoff spot in the North Division by one point over the Johnstown Chiefs. Dayton will try to increase their lead over Johnstown and creep up through the standings as well when they take on the Chiefs on Wednesday night at Cambria County War Memorial Arena at 7:30 p.m. The game will be available locally on radio on the official radio home of the Dayton Bombers AM 980 WONE the Sports Animal.
