Ice Dogs Make Deadline Deals

LONG BEACH, Calif. – March 11, 2003 – Long Beach Ice Dogs Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kevin Kaminski announced today that the Ice Dogs have acquired right wing Trent Clark from the San Diego Gulls in exchange for defenseman Bryan Vines. In addition, the Ice Dogs signed defenseman Justin Hellegards and forwards Tyrel Frisky and Jason Vermeulen. To make room on the roster, the club placed forwards Robb Wismer and Chris Carlson on waivers.

"Today's transactions were made on the premise of making the team better next year," said Kaminski. "After having a frustrating year by not the making the playoffs this season, we are starting the rebuilding phase for next season."

In 55 games this season with San Diego, the 25-year old Clark has registered 10 assists and 17 points with 17 penalty minutes (PIM). The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Clark played four seasons (1998-2002) with Colorado College of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), compiling 17-40-57 totals in 162 games. Clark, a native of Superior, Wisconsin, was named to the 2001-02 Western Collegiate Hockey Association's (WCHA) All-Academic Team.

Hellegards, 21, has appeared in 57 games with the Jacksonville Barracudas of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League (ACHL), recording 1-13-14 totals and 143 PIM. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound native from Kamack, Saskatchewan, ranks 18th (tied) among all ACHL defensemen in points and fifth in penalty minutes.

Frisky, 21, has played in 52 games with Jacksonville (ACHL), registering nine goals and 28 assists. The 6-foot, 190-pound native from Arborfield, Saskatchewan, ranks fifth on the Barracudas in scoring with 37 points.

Vermeulen, 22, has appeared in 35 games with Jacksonville (ACHL), recording 12 goals and 14 assists. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound native from Ceylon, Saskatchewan, ranks sixth on the Barracudas in scoring with 26 points.
