Aces Sweep WCHL Weekly Honors
March 11, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Yvan Corbin and Ryan Person earned West Coast Hockey League Player and Goaltender of the Week honors after helping the Anchorage Aces move into fifth place with three consecutive victories over the weekend.
Corbin was held pointless and Person did not play in Friday's 6-3 win over Long Beach, but both were major contributors in each of the next two victories over the Ice Dogs. Person stopped 17 of 18 shots and had a shutout going until midway through the third period in Saturday's 5-1 triumph, while Corbin scored twice, including a shorthanded goal that put the game away with 5:18 left in regulation.
Corbin stayed hot Sunday with a natural hat trick in the second period of an eventual 6-1 rout that completed the three-game sweep and propelled Anchorage out of last place for the first time in nearly two full seasons. The hard-luck Person lust his shutout bid with only 3:31 remaining in the game, but still finished with 21 stops and a .950 save percentage for the weekend in becoming the first Aces' goaltender to earn the award this season. Kimbi Daniels and Carl Drakensjo, each of whom scored three goals and assisted on two others in the Long Beach series, finished runner-up to Corbin for the weekly award.
Person has won each of his last three starts and lowered his goals against average from 5.49 to 5.09. Corbin's big weekend (he also had an assist Sunday in addition to his second hat trick of the season) leaves him tied with teammate Dean Larson for the WCHL scoring lead at 76 points. With 42 goals, Corbin sits atop the league while San Diego's Mark Pederson resides in second place at 38. The two snipers and their respective teams collide in Sullivan Arena this Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
