Outmanned RiverBlades Fall Short

March 11, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Arkansas RiverBlades News Release

The Mississippi Sea Wolves got a short-handed goal late in the third period, and the outmanned Arkansas RiverBlades fell just short in the end, losing 3-2 Tuesday in Biloxi.

Goaltender Scott Fankhouser, despite playing brilliant, took the hard-luck loss with 39 saves, including 20 in the second period alone. Buddy Smith and Dean Stock found the net for the Blades in defeat.

Mike Scott opened up the scoring at 13:08 of the first, notching his 22nd of the season from Chris Allen and Sergei Kuznetsov.

Then, just over three minutes later, Dean Stock tied it for Arkansas with his 5th of the year from Aaron Davis and Terry Marchant.

Both teams went scoreless in the second period, most of which can be credited to goaltender Scott Fankhouser, who stopped all 20 Sea Wolves offerings in the frame.

Mississippi would jump ahead just 43 seconds into the third period, as Cody Bowtell got his 23rd of the campaign assisted by Chris Allen and Dave Paradise.

Arkansas would not be deterred, however, as Buddy Smith lit the lamp on the power-play with his 25th goal. Maxim Linnik got a helper on the play.

But then a big mistake by goaltender Scott Fankhouser led to a short-handed goal for the Sea Wolves by Austin Miller. Fankhouser played the puck to center ice, trying to catch Mississippi on a line change. But Miller intercepted it, walked in, and scored his 6th of the year for the go-ahead goal, giving the Sea Wolves the win.

Arkansas got a power-play late in the game, and Jason Bermingham hit the post with a shot just as time expired.

The Blades played with just 12 skaters in the game due to injuries, and despite a tough effort, the Blades fell short in the end.

Mississippi outshot Arkansas 42-22 for the game, and the Wolves were 0-for-7 on the power-play. The RiverBlades were 1-for-7.

The RiverBlades return home to the Alltel Arena this Friday after a two-week road trip, hosting the Louisiana IceGators. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
