Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach Ice Dogs announced today that defenseman Jay Leach has been acquired by the Reading Royals for future considerations. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Leach, 24, was originally drafted in the 5th Round (115th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He played 65 games last season for the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL, registering 8-11-19 and 162 penalty minutes. He also played nine games, registering 0 points, for the Springfield Falcons of the AHL. The Ice Dogs will look to Leach to make an immediate impact at 6-4, 220 lbs.

"Jay is a big, strong, physical defenseman who moves the puck very well", said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski. "He brings a lot of leadership to our defense and bulk to our upper blue line." Leach joins what is already a strong core of solid defenseman in Lee Sorochan and Dan Vandermeer, and gives the Ice Dogs a total of four NHL draft picks on their roster. The others are Sorochan, Laplante, and Marois.

Leach will be ready to play in the Ice Dogs game tomorrow night in Fresno. Long Beach beat Fresno, 5-1, last Friday at the Long Beach Arena and will be looking to rebound after falling to Bakersfield last night, 5-2.
