Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. â Goaltender Joe Watkins stopped 27 shots for his fourth victory of the season, as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Long Beach Ice Dogs in front of 3,605 fans at Centennial Garden on Wednesday night.
It was Long Beach taking the 1-0 lead, with J.J. Hartmann taking advantage of a turnover in front of Watkins and lifting home the first score of the game. It would not last, however, as less than two minutes later, rookie winger Devin Francon blasted home his first career goal to make it 1-1 at the end of the first. Francon was playing in just his second game of the season after coming off Injured Reserve.
Bakersfield took the lead in the second period and never looked back, with Johan Astrom firing home his team-leading sixth goal of the year just 54 seconds into the frame on the power play. Later, Jason Ralph slammed home a rebound for his fourth of the season at 11:04 to make it 3-1 Condors. Watkins played great in the period, turning aside 14 shots , including a couple of odd-man rushes, and maintaining the lead.
Long Beach pulled close in the third, scoring on the power play at 13:30 â their eighth power play of the game â to make it 3-2. But Andrew Ianiero put it out of reach with his third goal of the season, redirecting a shot from Ralph, at 15:13 of the third. For good measure, Kevin Riehl added an empty net goal for the final decision. He currently leads the team with 13 points. Watkins improved to 4-3 with the 27-save victory. The Condors played tonight with veteran Paul Willett for the first time this season, signing him earlier in the day.
The Condors moved into a tie for fourth place in the Pacific Division with the Fresno Falcons, who lost 4-3 in San Diego tonight. In other action, Las Vegas dropped a 4-2 decision in Roanoke tonight, and Idaho won in Alaska 5-2.
The San Diego Gulls come into town on Friday night for a 7:00pm match. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Condors Cap, sponsored by Real Rock 93.1 and McDonald's. All Condors games can be heard live on KGEO AM 1230, and online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com, with the "Voice of the Condors" Kevin Bartl handling the play-by-play.
Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden box office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location.
