ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska's penchant for the penalty box led to 11 Idaho power plays and a 5-2 Steelheads victory over the Aces Friday night in front of 3,063 at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces scored just 14 seconds into the game, as Kimbi Daniels capitalized on a Michael Vyhlidal turnover, finding Chris Lipsett in the slot for a one-timer and a 1-0 lead. But soon Alaska began taking a series of penalties that would result in nine power play opportunities for the visitors over the first two periods. Idaho did not take advantage at first, but scored at even strength to tie the game 1-1 midway through the opening frame as Jan Kopecky snapped home a wrister from the high slot right after a face-off.

The Steelheads took their first lead when Derek Paget streaked down the slot unmolested at 5:46 of the second period and buried a well-timed centering pass from Andrew Proskurnicki. Finally, on its eighth chance, Idaho converted a power play with 2:00 left in the middle frame as Scott Burt tipped in a Darrell Hay drive from the point for a 3-1 bulge heading to intermission.

Daniels cut the gap to 3-2 when he stripped the puck from Jeff Bateman and coasted in to score shorthanded 7:10 into the third period, giving Alaska its league-high sixth shorthanded goal of the year. But the Steelheads (9-6) bounced right back, scoring on the very same power play 28 seconds later, as again Hay's shot from the point was redirected past Aces goaltender Dan Murphy, this time by Adam Copeland. Alaska's own power play proved ineffective, going scoreless in six chances and being burned for a shorthanded goal by Zenon Konopka with 6:53 left in regulation that effectively erased all hopes for a comeback.

Alaska (8-6) will practice Thursday in Sullivan at 10:00 a.m. before resuming its stretch of five consecutive games against Idaho Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
