Frisco RoughRiders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MO. - Despite a first-inning home run from Andy Ibanez, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, were kept quiet the rest of the way in a 5-1 loss to the Springfield Cardinals Thursday night at Hammons Field.
Ibanez clubbed his fifth home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the first, giving the Riders (56-60 overall, 18-29 second half) a 1-0 lead against starter J.C. Sulbaran. However, Sulbaran settled in nicely the rest of the way. He worked eight innings, allowing one run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
The righty didn't allow a hit after the second inning, and the only runner to reach after that was Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a throwing error in the fourth. Sulbaran (3-2) retired 13 consecutive hitters to complete his outing and earn the win. Ronnie Shaban worked a scoreless ninth, retiring all three hitters he faced.
The Cardinals (64-52, 23-23) got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third against Riders starter Reed Garrett (2-5). After issuing a bases-loaded walk to Blake Drake, Garrett allowed an RBI single to Luis Cruz and a sacrifice fly to Allen Staton, putting the RoughRiders in a 3-1 hole. The Cardinals added insurance with two unearned runs in the eighth against Jefri Hernandez.
The Riders continue their 10-game road trip in Tulsa Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Drillers. A pair of quality arms will go head-to-head, with Frisco's Ariel Jurado (1-1, 1.59 ERA) squaring off against Chase De Jong (11-4, 2.83 ERA).
