Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Mott Hyde drove in three runs and Alejandro Garcia had three hits as Corpus Christi (22-24; 69-47) edged Northwest Arkansas 5-4 Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 4,393.

The Naturals staged two-on, one-out trouble for Hooks reliever Ryan Thompson in the ninth, the result of Alfredo Escalera's single and hit batsman Frank Schwindel. Ryan O'Hearn lined out to shortstop Antonio Nunez near the second-base bag, who doubled up Escalera.

Thompson's save was his second and made a winner of starter Kent Emanuel (4-2).

O'Hearn's two-out double put two men in scoring position for Northwest Arkansas (24-22; 53-63) in the first, but a nifty running catch by right fielder Ramon Laureano near foul territory eliminated the threat.

Hyde's three-run double was the big blow during Corpus Christi's four-run second against Ashton Goudeau (4-12). Nick Tanielu's lead-off walk conveyed to the initial run on the first of consecutive singles from James Ramsay, Chase McDonald, and Garcia. Hyde's two-base hit then soared over the head of right fielder Escalera.

The Naturals responded with two runs off Emanuel on back-to-back one-out doubles by Escalera and Schwindel, plus Mauricio Ramos' single.

Goudeau, didn't come out for the third after just 51 pitches (31 strikes).

His replacement, Eric Stout, was touched for a run in the fourth. Garcia's two-out double, an infield single by Hyde and walk to Laureano loaded the bases for Garrett Stubbs, who also worked a free pass.

Northwest Arkansas pulled to within a run at 5-4 two frames later. Zane Evans' triple plated O'Hearn (lead-off single) and Humberto Arteaga contributed a sacrifice fly. Emanuel failed to finish the inning, pulled after 5 2/3, nine hits, and a strikeout. His pitch count was 87 (53).

Kevin Comer bridged from Emanuel to Thompson with 2 1/3 scoreless. Miguel Almonte and Reid Redman teamed for three scoreless from the Naturals bullpen.

The clubs square off at 7:05 Thursday in the series finale, Corpus Christi's Cy Sneed (4-4) vs. Josh Staumont (1-0). Fans can enjoy Stripes Thirsty Thursday with discounted beer and soda.
