Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Monday they have acquired 2004-born forward Brayden Edwards, a second-round draft pick in the 2025 and a fourth-round pick in the 2023 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft from the Winnipeg ICE in exchange for 2002-born forward Chase Wheatcroft and a fifth-round pick.
Edwards, 17, was originally a sixth-round draft pick (127th overall) in the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft by the ICE. The first- year forward from Abbotsford, BC has skated in 11 games with Winnipeg totaling three assists along with two penalty minutes. The 6'1, 175-pound forward totaled five points (4g-1a) in five games last season with the Yale Hockey Academy while collecting 29 points (14g-15a) in 36 games in 2019-2020.
"We really like Edwards and think he has some upside as a centre," said Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt. "We think he will fit in with our 2004 group while being able to add the draft picks is big for our organization."
Wheatcroft, 19, was undrafted in the WHL Draft and signed by the Hurricanes in 2018. The Calgary, AB product has skated in 22 games this season totaling 17 points (4g-13a) along with eight penalty minutes with Lethbridge. He appeared in 104 career regular season games over three seasons finishing with 61 career points (19g-42a) and 66 penalty minutes.
"Chase is a special person and has been a great Hurricane, which made this a tough trade," added Anholt. "We'd like to thank Chase for his efforts over his time with the organization and wish him the best."
The Hurricanes welcome the Red Deer Rebels to the ENMAX Centre on Friday as 7:00pm before visiting the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday. Tickets for Friday's game can be purchased in person at the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre.
