Hughes Named SL Hitter of the Week

MONTGOMERY, AL - Montgomery Biscuits first basemen Rhyne Hughes has been named as the Southern League's Hitter of the Week for the week of April 20-26.
During the week, Hughes connected on four home runs, while batting .375 (9-24) and driving in seven runs. He homered three times in the Biscuits five-game series against Mobile and added a four-hit game on April 20th. The 25-year old also scored five runs and added a pair of doubles.
Hughes, who has started all 17 games thus far this season for Montgomery, is currently leading the Southern League in home runs (6) and extra-base hits (20). He is also fourth in the league in RBIs, having collected 13.
The weekly award is the first for the Biscuits since LHP David Price was honored as the SL Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 28 - August 4, 2008. Hughes is the first Biscuit to be named Hitter of the Week since 1B Gaby Martinez was named for the week of August 20-27, 2007.
A native of Picayune, MS, Hughes was drafted by the Rays in the 8th round of the 2004 June draft and is currently in his fifth professional season. He made his Biscuits debut on August 1, 2007 and spent the entire 2008 season in Montgomery, posting a batting average of .268 with a career-high 14 home runs and 52 RBIs.
Huntsville Stars left-hander Chris Cody was named as the SL Pitcher of the Week, going 2-0 while allowing just one run over 12 innings pitched.
The Biscuits continue their five-game series with the Jacksonville Suns Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium at 7:05 PM. RHP Heath Rollins (1-1, 3.45) will make the start against RHP Willie Glen (1-1, 4.24) for Jacksonville.
