MOBILE, Ala. - A two-run first inning for the BayBears was overshadowed by three second-inning solo home runs which pushed the Birmingham Barons to a 4-2 victory over the BayBears on Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Kyle McCulloch (3-1) got off to a rough start for Birmingham (12-5) as he allowed Mark Hallberg and James Skelton to reach with consecutive one-out singles in the first. Two batters later, Bryan Byrne reached on an infield single up the middle which brought both Hallberg and Skelton around to score, putting the BayBears (12-6) on top.

Barry Enright (0-1) couldn't hold the lead for long as he was inconvenienced by a bevy of Barons blasts. Brandon Allen started the fireworks by lifting a 3-2 fastball over the wall in right, quickly followed by Dayan Viciedo's first professional home run. With two outs, C.J. Retherford got into the act as he ripped a homer to left.

McCulloch stayed strong throughout the rest of the night as he scattered seven singles over seven innings. Birmingham advanced their cushion in the seventh as Gordon Beckham doubled home Robbie Hudson against Kyler Newby. Scott Maine recorded the final seven outs for the BayBears while holding the Barons at 4-2.

Jhonny Nunez (S, 2) was threatened in the eighth inning but went unscored upon after surrendering a pair of two-out singles to Byrne and Chris Rahl. Nunez worked a perfect ninth to post the Barons in sole possession of first place.

Bryan Augenstein (3-0, 0.47) tosses for the BayBears on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. as they play game four of their series with the Barons at Hank Aaron Stadium. For tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
