
Carolina tops Tennesse, 6-4

Sevierville, TN --- Carolina scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to sever a 4-4 tie to defeat Tennessee 6-4 at Smokies Park on Monday night, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Michael Griffin scored from second base in the ninth on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Heisey thanks to an errant throw from third baseman Jonathan Mota that reached the Smokies bullpen. Logan Parker added his fourth hit of the game, a two-out RBI single for the two run lead.
Sean Watson (S, 1) relieved Federico Baez (W, 2-2) to start the ninth and made things interesting with a pair of walks and a single to fill the bases before retiring Tony Thomas on a flyball to centerfield to end the game.
Justin Mallet made his Mudcats debut, working 4 2/3 innings, permitting seven hits and four runs, whiffing five. Mallett was called back from Triple-A Louisville and stepped into the rotation for Jordan Smith, who was placed on the disabled list on Saturday.
Tennessee (9-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second only to have Carolina (7-11) score twice in the fourth for the lead. Parker doubled home the tying run, then scored on a two-base hit by Shaun Cumberland. After the Smokies tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, Carolina added two more against Hung-Wen Chen in the fifth thanks to a triple by Zach Cozart and a single from Juan Francisco, but Tennessee tied the game again with two in the fifth.
Carolina's bullpen worked 4 1/3 innings, yielding just one hit in the victory. Ruben Medina pitched 1 1/3 innings, Baez two perfect, and Watson threw a scoreless ninth for the save.
The Mudcats outhit Tennessee 14-8 in the victory with Chris Heisey and Francisco collecting three apiece, along with Parker's four.
James Avery (0-2, 3.60) starts the series' fourth game on Tuesday morning at 11:30 AM against Casey Coleman (3-0, 1.50).
