Daytona Tortugas News Release
Dunedin, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (26-16, 43-49) snapped their three-game winning streak with a 3-2 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays (19-24, 51-62) on Monday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
C Joe Hudson put the Tortugas on top 1-0 early with a solo homer in the third. He cranked one directly over the left-field foul pole for his fourth longball in his last seven games. Two of those home runs have come off Blue Jays starter Shane Dawson (W, 1-1), who finished after 5.1 innings on Monday.
RHP Keury Mella (L, 1-1) was brilliant in his first three innings, but ran into trouble in the decisive fourth frame. After allowing just one single and recording four strikeouts his first time through the order, he issued three walks in the fourth to load the bases. Mella hit then Boomer Collins with two outs to even the score at 1-1, and Mike Reeves lined a two-run single to center, which put Dunedin in front, 3-1.
Daytona mounted a rally in the sixth and loaded the bases with one down to chase Dawson from the game. Arik Sikula (H, 3) came on and walked Hudson to force in a run, drawing the 'Tugas within 3-2.
Dunedin's bullpen locked it down from there, with Sikula and Will Browning (S, 17) combining to allow just two baserunners (an error and a single) the rest of the way.
Tortugas pitching was nearly up to the task. After Mella's four innings (3 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 6 K), LHP Nolan Becker retired seven of the eight batters he faced, allowing just a harmless single to Collins. RHP Carlos Gonzalez took over from there, tossing 1.2 hitless innings of relief to keep Daytona within striking distance.
The Tortugas stranded 10 men on base and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Monday. SS Carlton Daal was the only player on either side with multiple hits; he blooped a single to right in the fourth and laid down a bunt single to third base in the sixth.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET. RHP Nick Travieso will make his second start since returning from the Disabled List, with LHP Seth Varner expected to follow. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:20 p.m. ET.
