Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The streaking Dunedin Blue Jays (51-62, 19-24) won their fifth-straight game Monday night by holding off the Daytona Tortugas (63-49, 26-16), 3-2, in the series opener.
Canadian native Shane Dawson made his home debut for the D-Jays and allowed just one run through the first five innings. His final line read two runs on six hits; he also struck out five batters. Dawson earned his first Florida State League win.
The Daytona Tortugas scored one run through the first five innings on a Joe Hudson homer in the third. The Tortugas held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Dunedin plated three.
The D-Jays walked three times in the frame loading the bases for Boomer Collins. The Texas native was hit by a pitch forcing home a run. Canadian born Mike Reeves then singled in a pair as the Jays leapfrogged the Tortugas, taking a 3-1 advantage.
Daytona threatened in the sixth frame, plating one run before loading the bases. Dawson exited the contest with one out as Arik Sikula entered, picking up three inherited runners. Sikula allowed one inherited runner to score via a walk, but then struck out Jeff Gelalich before Ty Washington flied out to Anthony Alford in center, preserving a one-run edge.
Sikula went two innings and allowed one inherited runner to score. Wil Browning entered with one out in the eighth and converted the five-out save. Browning picked up his 17th save and stranded two inherited runners in the process. The D-Jays' closer has taken on 12 inherited runners in 2015 with Dunedin and not one has scored.
The D-Jays and Tortugas will square up again tomorrow, Tuesday, August 11 at 6:30PM as Dunedin looks to extend its streak to six-straight wins. Daytona will send right-hander Nick Travieso to the mound. Dunedin has yet to announce a starter.
