Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - Ericson Leonora provided a big two-run home run as the Tampa Yankees (21-23, 55-59) defeated the Brevard County Manatees (18-24, 47-64-1), 4-2, in the series opener on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
LHP Jordan Montgomery (4-4) dealt a quality start to earn his first win since 7/12. The southpaw held Brevard County to two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings of work, walking two while striking out seven.
The Manatees jumped out in front with the first two batters of the game. Omar Garcia doubled down the left field line and scored on a single to center by Chris McFarland.
Tampa answered with Leonora's blast in the fourth. Mike Ford hit a leadoff single to right. Two batters later, Leonora crushed a no-doubt home run over the left field wall to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. It was Leonora's 11th home run of the season.
The 'Tees tied the score in the top of the fifth. With one out, Angel Ortega reached on a fielding error by Andujar at third. Garcia walked and McFarland lined out to left before Clint Coulter hit a two-out RBI single to center, tying the game at 2-2.
In the sixth, the T-Yanks took the lead for good against RHP Jorge Ortega. Ford lined a triple passed a diving Coulter in right and scored on a ground-rule double to left by Andujar. A groundout pushed Andujar to third and Leonora drew a walk. Michael O'Neill then gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead with an RBI bloop single to right-center.
Ortega (8-8) allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings, walking one while striking out four.
LHP Caleb Frare tallied three strikeouts and a walk over a scoreless inning and two-third. RHP Giovanny Gallegos worked around a single in the ninth for a four-out save. It was Gallegos' third save of the season.
Jorge Mateo, Abiatal Avelino (2B), Ford (3B, 2 R), and Andujar (2 2B, RBI, R) each went 2-for-4. O'Neill (2-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI) snapped an 0-for-18 skid.
