Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, N.Y. - The Tri-City ValleyCats added three new members to its 2008 roster on Tuesday including the Houston Astros second selection in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. Pitchers Jordan Lyles and Kyle Greenwalt and catcher Pedro Gonzalez join the ValleyCats after spending most of the season with Rookie level Greeneville.
Lyles was the 38th overall selection in the June draft, taken in the first compensation round by the Astros. Lyles, 17, has started 13 games for Greeneville, compiling a 3-3 record with a 3.99 ERA and 64 strikeouts and 10 walks in 49.2 innings. Lyles has picked up a victory in his last two starts, tossing 10 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out 18 batters while walking none.
Greenwalt was drafted in the 20th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. In 13 starts, Greenwalt is 6-4 with Greeneville this season with the 3.14 ERA and 53 strikeouts and 14 walks in 71.2 innings. In his last start, Greenwalt tossed six shutout innings and allowed just five hits.
Gonzalez joins the ValleyCats a week after catcher Julian Henson was promoted to Class A Lexington. After signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2004, Gonzalez has hit .253 in 26 games in his fourth season in the Astros minor league system.
The three newest members of the ValleyCats will arrive Tuesday afternoon before the ValleyCats face the Brooklyn Cyclones for the third and final game of the series. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium Box Office, calling (518) 629-CATS or by logging onto www.tcvalleycats.com.
